Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Bioactive Natural Product Research is headed by Prof. Dr. Lingyi Kong, professor of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program and winner of China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists. Composed of 4 Professors, 6 associate Professors, and 3 Lecturers with multidisciplinary training and research background, our laboratory devotes to the Research & Development (R&D) of TCM and Natural Medicines for their utilization and related basic researches.

Benefited from and based on our long-term research in the fields of Natural Medicinal Chemistry and Chemistry of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we devote to the Research & Development (R&D) of TCM and Natural Medicines for their utilization and related basic researches: Utilization of techniques state-of-art in Natural Products Chemistry to clarify the effective components of single TCM herb or other medicinal plants, and based on which to develop their quality control methods; to synthesize and modify characteristic active compounds; to find lead compounds by Structure Activity Relationship (SAR) study for further drug development. Utilization of research methods for Chemistry of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and modern analysis technology to investigate the material basis of Chinese formula and their absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) processes with special emphasis on the interaction of components and fractions, and to clarify the scientific connotation of multi-component, multi-target and synergistic action of Chinese formula. Therefore, the following research fields are our interest:

lStudy on the material base of commonly used TCMs

lDiscovery & research on novel natural products

lStructure modification & total synthesis of natural products

lBiotransformation of natural products

lNatural products based research & development of innovative drugs

Up to 2018, over 500 research papers have been published in SCI journals. Twenty patents have been applied, and eighteen authorized. Ten books were issued under the general editorship of Prof. Lingyi Kong. The faculty members of our lab have undertaken several curriculums, “Structural Chemistry of Natural Products” and “Advanced Spectral Analysis” which is listed as “Excellent graduate courses of Jiangsu province” for master′s degree. Our lab offers undergraduate courses, “Spectral Analysis of Organic Compounds” and “Natural Medicinal Chemistry” which administered by Prof. Kong is listed as “National Elite Course”. The laboratory has both Master’s and Doctoral program in Chemistry of Chinese Materia Medica and Medicinal Chemistry, and is also eligible for the recruitment of graduates overseas and for postdoctoral research. Hitherto now, 267 master and doctorate graduates have been granted with corresponding degrees after successful fulfillment of their dissertations.

Our laboratory has established friendly relations and cooperation with other research institutions both home and abroad, such as Japan, USA, Italy, Austria, and etc.. We have hosted students from the USA and Korea for their masters’ and doctoral degree research, and benefited from the exchange of personnel and academic cooperation.
