Founded in 1949, School of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy (STCP) of China PharmaceuticalUniversity (CPU),originally known as Pharmacognosy in National College of Pharmacy. In 1959, Department of Pharmacognosy was established in Nanjing College of Pharmacy. At the beginning of 1980s, its name was changed to Department of Traditional Chinese Medicines. In October1986, with the approval of the State Education Commission, ChinaPharmaceuticalUniversity was established with the incorporation of NanjingCollege of Pharmacy and NanjingCollege of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy under construction. Then, its name was changed to STCP of China PharmaceuticalUniversity. In December 1998, it merged with Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicines Research.

       In China, STCP is an earlier institution to carry out research in traditional Chinese medicines and natural medicines. After 60 years of construction, STCP has become a high level institute with significant influence in the field of Chinese Materia Medica. STCP hosts 2550 full-time students, including bachelor’s degree candidates,  postgraduates and international students. It also has 157 staff. Equipped with 5 teaching and research institutions, and Jiangsu Pharmaceutical Museums and Medicinal Botanical Garden.

        STCP constantly strengthens the connotation development, sets up the first professor committee in CPU, strengthens research and democratic management, and the work has achieved remarkable results. STCP is also Educational Work Advanced Collective in Jiangsu. In the course of development, a batch of outstanding teachers with great contribution in talent cultivation and scientific research have emerged. They also got the recognized achievements in scientific research. These teachers are Ye Juquan, Xu Guojun, Zhou Jun academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Hu Zhibi academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering; and some famous scholars, Prof. Zhao Shouxun, Prof. Yan Yongqing, Prof. Lou Fengchang, Prof. Liu Jinghan, Prof. Ding Jiayi. There are 12 winners of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars. All have done great contribution to Traditional Chinese Pharmacy.
