Pharmaceutical Science Education Base

Jiangsu Pharmaceutical Museum


Jiangsu Pharmaceutical Museum, originally the Medicinal Specimens Hall of China Pharmaceutical University back in 1936, has developed into a professional museum of pharmacy with rich collections and distinctive characteristics after more than 70 years of construction and development. Currently, the museum has two gallery halls with a total area of about 2,000 square meters and 5 gallery areas, including pharmaceutical history gallery, fine TCM specimens gallery, traditional Chinese medicinal specimens gallery, marine drug gallery and modern pharmaceutical gallery, together with a Medicinal Plant Specimens Room and a Traditional Chinese Medicine Identification Laboratory, forming the “5 Zone- 2 Rooms” exhibition pattern. There is a collection of 500 TCM relics and 5000 bottles of specimens for 1800 of TCM. More than 25,000 portions with 5,000 medicinal plants herbarium sheets are kept in it. Among all the collections many are precious and valuable specimens for academic research, such as the 28 types of research specimens which won National Programs for Science and Technology Development projects from the 6th Five-Year Plan to the 9th Five-Year Plan and the 1st Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and more than 300 bottles of medicinal plants and crude drugs specimens from German Merck Corporations. Additionally, the museum preserves the unearthed medicinal material specimens from Changsha Mawangdui No. 1 Han tomb, the top-grade relic of the state, and traditional Chinese medicine relics of different historical periods in China.

The PharmaceuticalMuseum is a window and communication platform for both comprehensive teaching & research and science popularization. It has played an important role in teaching, scientific research and academic exchanges by holding exhibitions, seminars, consultation and demonstration, attracting scholars, students and other people to visit and exchange from both home and abroad. Based on the distinctive characteristics, rich collections and positive role in social science popularization, TCM Specimen Museum — the predecessor of the Pharmaceutical Museum was identified as Popular Science Education Base for elementary and secondary schools by Nanjing Municipal Education Commission in 1997. In July 2014, it was entitled as “JiangsuPharmaceuticalMuseum” by Jiangsu Provincial Administration of Cultural Heritage and thus officially entered the construction of the museum sequence. In 2015, it was approved as Provincial Popular Science Education Base in Jiangsu and it further expanded the scope of services.




 

Medicinal Herb Garden

Founded in 1958, the Medicinal Herb Garden is an important base for teaching, scientific research and pharmaceutical science popularization. It is one of the few gardens with the fullest collection of medicinal plants in China and is also the national-level pharmacy training base at CPU.

After more than 50 years of construction, the area of Medicinal Herb Garden has expanded to more than 320 mu, on which more than 1200 kinds of medicinal plants have been planted. Since its establishment, a variety of teaching and scientific researches on medicinal plants have been undertaken in the garden: the growth and development, domestication and introduction, cultivation and breeding,  and resources development etc. In addition, the research project —Research on Crocus Corm’ Rejuvenation, Production Increase and Popularization won the 2nd Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. The teaching reform project — Construction and Teaching Practice of Medicinal Plant Base on Campus won the 1st Prize of Provincial Teaching Achievement Award in Jiangsu and the 2nd Prize of National Teaching Achievement Award. 

The Garden targets the spreading of pharmaceutical knowledge and popularization of pharmaceutical science through teaching and training. More than 10,000 undergraduates from over 20 specialties undertake their teaching practice here every year. Moreover, it attracts more than 1,000 teachers and students as well as researchers for the visit and exchange. 10 short-term training programs concerning “Cultivation of Medicinal Plants” have been held till now.
